Direct Access Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy in Christchurch

What is it?

Fast-Track Gastroscopy & Colonoscopy in Christchurch

Canterbury Endoscopy offers a direct access pathway for gastroscopy and colonoscopy in Christchurch, allowing eligible patients to proceed straight to their procedure without an initial specialist consultation. This saves both time and cost, and is available for privately insured and self-funding patients

Who is eligible?

You may be suitable for Direct Access if you:

  • Are generally fit and healthy with no significant medical comorbidities

  • Have a clear indication for endoscopy based on symptoms (eg. anaemia, rectal bleeding, reflux, heartburn, abdominal pain, change in bowel habits)

  • Require screening procedure due to high risk family history

  • Require follow-up procedures due to personal history

How it works?

3-step-process

  1. GP Referral  or Self-referral

  2. Triage: Referral is reviewed to ensure this pathway is safe for you

  3. Our clinical team contacts you to discuss procedure and provide prep instructions prior to the procedure

We are an Affiliated Provider with Southern Cross and a nib First Choice Provider

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a specialist appointment first?

No, not necessarily — your GP refers you directly, and our team triages the referral before booking.

Is direct access endoscopy covered by insurance?

Yes, for most Southern Cross and nib members. Contact us to confirm your cover.

How quickly can I be booked?

Once your referral is triaged and approved, we aim to book a procedure by next business day. We typically aim to undertake procedure within 2-4 weeks where possible.

What if I'm not eligible for direct access?

We'll arrange a standard consultation with Dr Lamba before proceeding.
