Why AI-Integrated Colonoscopy?

For decades, the colonoscopy has been the 'gold standard' for bowel cancer prevention. This is achieved by finding and removing 'pre-cancerous' lesions (aka polyps), therefore stopping from bowel cancer developing in first place!

However, even the most experienced eyes are human, and this is where Artificial Intelligence comes in, and truly becomes a second pair of eyes, assisting your doctor in helping find these polyps.  It is truly a 'digital co-pilot' that never blinks.

What does the evidence say about AI colonoscopy ?

  • A 1% increase in detection matters: Research shows that for every 1% increase in an endoscopist’s Adenoma Detection Rate (ADR), a patient’s risk of interval bowel cancer decreases by 3%. (link to the NEJM study)

  • Reducing the "Miss Rate": Even high-performing specialists can miss small or flat polyps due to lighting or positioning. Recent meta-analysis (2024) of nearly 23,000 patients indicate that use of Artificial Intelligence in colonoscopy can increase the detection of adenomatous polyps by up to 20%. (link to the study)

  • The Evolving Global Standard: AI systems like the ones we use are now being adopted by leading clinics worldwide, proven to significantly enhance the thoroughness of every examination.

Does the AI perform the procedure?

No. Dr. Lamba performs the entire procedure. The AI is a supportive tool that highlights areas of interest on the monitor for the doctor to review.

Does it cost more?

No. At our Christchurch clinic, we view Artificial Intelligence as a standard component of a high-quality procedure. We utilise the state-of-the-art equipment at the Southern Endoscopy Centre to provide the most accurate diagnostic results possible for every patient, with no additional costs associated with using AI technology.

Is it safe?

Absolutely. The AI is a non-invasive software layer that works with the existing camera. It doesn't change the physical nature of the colonoscopy; it simply enhances what the doctor can see
